The goal of the webinar is to discuss the current issues brought up in the presenter’s articles including, “The Power of White Gaze: Erasure of Black Signers” and “Dear White Deaf People, Let’s Talk About Color-Blind Racism in the Age of Colorblindness”. Other topics to be discussed are how do the current issues facing Deaf communities of color impact the interpreting communities and how unconscious bias continues.
Target Audience: Educational Interpreters, but all are welcomed.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
● Articulate current issues facing Deaf Communities of Color
● Describe how those issues impact the interpreting community
● Define Implicit Bias

About Your Speaker
David Player, MA earned his MA in Linguistics with a focus in sociolinguistics on signed languages. He earned his BA in Sociology & Anthropology with a minor in Black Studies. He is currently an ASL & Deaf Studies faculty member at California State University, Sacramento.
