It is essential that we unpack our privileges in order to “do no harm”. It’s even more important as white interpreters to realize how our underlying biases impact our work. This book was helpful in recognizing some of what we may do that seems innocuous or comes under the guise of cultural mediation and in reality adds to the oppression of the communities we serve. Using the content of each passage to do some soul searching is a good thing and will assist in making us better interpreters and allies. Beautiful. I tried to think of examples where I had either committed or was conscious of Not committing some of these microaggressions and few were related to subcultures. Perhaps this is due to a lack of awareness when I work with DPOC. I will continue to ponder for sure.
