The workshop will provide an understanding of Indigenous way of doing interpretation.  The presenter will teach and guide working interpreters with accurate information and sign vocabulary using in Native/Indigenous settings.   In addition, participants will learn about how PPO (Power, Privilege, Oppression) might disempower Native/Indigenous who are Deaf. This workshop is a mixture of presenting, educating, and opportunities to ask open-discussion throughout the webinar.

 

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will analyze how PPO (Power, Privilege and Oppression) affected from their past trainings which breeds “assumption” of Indigenous Deaf/hearing people.
  2. Participants will learn about Indigenous people, customs, and rules.
  3. Participants will learn more about Indigenous style of interpreting.
  4. Participants will study placements for interpreters to position themselves in Indigenous settings (Diagrams will be displayed during webinar).
  5. Participants will question and discuss about Indigenous topics and sign language.
  6. Participants will learn more about time, space and silence.
  7. Participants will understand our Indigenous way of explain “know the grounds that you step on”, and “know your place” in our Indigenous settings while doing interpreting assignments.

About Dr. Melanie McKay-Cody

Dr. Melanie McKay-Cody is a Cherokee Deaf and earned her doctoral degree in linguistic and socio-cultural anthropology at the University of Oklahoma. She has studied critically-endangered indigenous sign languages in North America since 1994 and helps different tribes preserve their tribal signs. She also specialized in Indigenous Deaf studies and interpreter training incorporating Native culture, North American Indian Sign Language and ASL.

Participants will receive a pre-assessment form with questions related to diversity topics.

This course is being offered for 0.2 PS PPO (Power, Privilege, and Oppression) CEUs: 1 hour  webinar presentation & 1 hour of participation in the online community discussion forum following the webinar.
