This workshop will use the analogy of interpreting being a journey for the mentee and mentor and we will discuss what both parties need to “pack” to make it successfully to their destination.
Discussions of working with BIPOC mentees and mentors will also include strategies for implementation for successful experiences and how to minimize racial disparities during the
mentoring sessions.

Target Audience: Interpreters, Aspiring Interpreters, Interpreting Students with Some Content Knowledge Level

Educational Objectives:

1) Participants will examine the Vygotsky theory of scaffolding and demonstrate effective
practices to incorporate the theory of scaffolding into their mentoring.
2) Participants will list effective interpreting techniques to utilize in mentoring session.
3) Participants will implement scaffolding strategies to create a brave mentoring space for
BIPOC mentors and mentees.
4) Participants will discuss issues of racial boundaries or disparities and how to handle them.

About Your Speaker

 Ms. LaToya Childs is a native of Atlanta, GA. She has spent 20 years in the interpreting profession and currently is an interpreter educator. Her passion includes mentoring novice and aspiring interpreters. She attended the Master Mentor Program where she learned methodologies, theories, and practices to be an effective mentor. She is currently President of the National Alliance of Black Interpreters- Atlanta chapter and co-chair of their mentoring program. LaToya believes a successful mentoring relationship occurs when you consider the perspectives of both the mentee and mentor. In this workshop we will investigate theories, methodologies, and practices to create an enjoyable “mentoring journey”.

Participants will receive a Post-Assessment form that will identify their involvement and understanding of diversity topics covered in the webinar. 

Participants will provide feedback via a presenter evaluation form.
