"Ibram X. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. Instead of working with the policies and system we have in place, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it. "

Course Modules:

Understanding the difference between "not racist" and "antiracist."

Dr. Kendi lays out several definitions of racism and antiracism in varying
contexts (race, biology, ethnicity, body, although there is a standard underlying theme: Racists actions,
inaction, or expression of racist ideas support racist policy.

Kendi draws attention to broader themes (culture, racial group behavior, colorism,
anti-white racism) which engender beliefs of racial/cultural superiority and -- the idea that the
behavior of individuals is somehow applicable to the entire group. Kendi further discusses the ideas that
sustain the belief of inequities between people with different complexions. Kendi also brings the belief
that people who hold no social power can not be racist.

Racism always creates inequities among different racialized groups and has an even more formidable presence
when identities intersect.

Kendi views “anti-racism” as a step beyond empathy and allyship. Here, it is examined as a call to action, a call for participation in social justice reformation.

"I recently completed, "How to be an Antiracist", through Diversity Academy and loved my experience. I have taken many workshops, whether it be in person, or online. This was my first workshop that incorporated reading a book with a discussion group. Diversity Academy's team pushed us all to really dive deeper into the book and into ourselves with leading questions for our readings as well as on our responses to the main questions and our discussions with each other. I felt like I truly learned a great deal and took more with me to continue my learning process, especially in the times we are currently living in. The material was so relevant to life in general, but the way the team and other group members helped us to bring it into our everyday work as interpreters was so impactful. I would definitely take classes from Diversity Academy in the future and highly recommend this site for other interpreters looking to improve not only their work, but themselves as a person. "
