Dr. Suzette Garay: Not Your Typical LGBTQ Model - The Deaf LGBTQ & POC Experiences within LGBTQ Spaces
The personal experiences of Deaf LGBTQ + POC can often be misunderstood based on implicit biases, assumptions, and prejudices against those who are not like LGBTQ members you may know. Thus, their existence as POC can unknowingly be fully erased from their LGBTQ stories. Through this webinar, participants will have opportunities to learn and appreciate better insights into what types of oppressive experiences LGBTQ+ POC members have had and how these oppressive experiences impact Deaf LGBTQ+POC in various leadership positions, personal lived experiences, and steps which can be taken to ensure these members can be heard, seen, and supported both in their personal and social spaces. For Interpreters working with LGBTQ + POC Deaf members, it is especially important to consider how these members’ intersectional identities may shape their experiences of stigma, stress, and community connectedness as a whole.
